As a mom focused on creating a secure, nurturing environment for your baby, you may have heard about bedsharing as a way to enhance sleep, bonding, and breastfeeding. But did you know bedsharing can also support your baby’s rapid brain growth and emotional well-being?

This guide will explore the benefits of bedsharing, its connection to your baby’s natural instincts (often called the “Stone Age brain”), and how to bedshare safely. I’ll also share my personal perspective on what has worked for my family, including allowing my baby to sleep on my chest during those precious early months.

What is Bedsharing?

Bedsharing is the practice of sharing your bed with your baby, allowing them to sleep close to you. For centuries, this has been a common practice worldwide, helping parents meet their baby’s needs for warmth, feeding, and comfort during the night.

Your Baby’s Stone Age Brain
Your baby’s brain is wired for survival. Thousands of years ago, a baby separated from their caregiver at night could face cold, predators, or starvation. Even in today’s modern world, your baby’s instincts tell them to stay close to you.

By bedsharing, you create a safe, loving environment that aligns with these natural instincts, helping your baby feel secure and protected.

The Benefits of Bedsharing for Your Baby

1. Supports Rapid Brain Growth

In the first three years of life, your baby’s brain grows to 80% of its adult size—a period of incredible development that requires proper nourishment and emotional support.

  • Frequent Nighttime Feeding: Bedsharing allows for easy nighttime breastfeeding, ensuring your baby gets the essential nutrients for brain development.
  • Oxytocin Boost: Sleeping close to you stimulates oxytocin release, which calms your baby, reduces stress, and supports healthy brain growth.

2. Promotes Safer Sleep

Frequent waking is normal for newborns and serves as a protective mechanism against Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).

  • Proximity to Mom: When your baby sleeps close to you, they can smell your breast, which helps regulate their breathing.
  • Frequent Feeding: Bedsharing encourages natural, frequent feeding, which keeps your baby in lighter sleep stages, reducing SIDS risk.

3. Encourages Emotional Security

Bedsharing helps your baby feel loved, safe, and connected. These nightly reassurances foster a secure attachment, laying the foundation for confidence and emotional resilience as your child grows.

Safe Bedsharing: My Perspective on Chest Sleeping

While safe bedsharing typically includes placing your baby on a firm mattress beside you, I personally believe that chest sleeping can also be a secure option when done with caution.

My Experience
My daughter slept on my chest for the first six months, and it was one of the most beautiful and bonding experiences of my life. I made sure to lie on a firm mattress, stayed sober and alert, and avoided pillows or heavy blankets nearby.

Why Chest Sleeping Feels Natural

  • Babies are soothed by the sound of your heartbeat, a comforting reminder of their time in the womb.
  • Being on your chest allows your baby to remain close to your warmth and scent, helping to regulate their breathing and body temperature.

If chest sleeping feels right for you and your baby, trust your instincts while ensuring the environment is as safe as possible.

The Safe 7: How to Bedshare Safely

To make bedsharing a safe and nurturing experience, follow these Safe 7 guidelines:

1️⃣ Smoke-Free Environment
Ensure no one in your home smokes, as exposure to smoke increases the risk of SIDS.

2️⃣ Sober Parent
Avoid alcohol, drugs, or medications that impair alertness.

3️⃣ Breastfeeding Mom
Breastfeeding mothers naturally respond to their baby’s needs, making bedsharing safer.

4️⃣ Healthy Baby
Your baby should be full-term, healthy, and over 2.5kg (5.5 lbs).

5️⃣ Safe Sleep Surface
Use a firm mattress free of pillows, heavy bedding, and gaps. Avoid couches or recliners, as they are unsafe for co-sleeping.

6️⃣ Sleeping Position
Babies are generally recommended to sleep on their backs when beside you. However, I personally found chest sleeping to be a safe and secure option during those early months.

7️⃣ Baby Next to Mom
Your baby should sleep beside you (or on your chest), not between two adults or other children.

Why Bedsharing Benefits Moms Too

For moms, bedsharing offers a range of practical and emotional benefits:

  • Better Sleep: With your baby close by, you can respond to their needs without fully waking up.
  • Easier Breastfeeding: Night feedings are more convenient when your baby is within arm’s reach.
  • Stronger Bond: Bedsharing fosters a deep emotional connection, helping you and your baby feel more in tune with each other.
